A World Like No Other

Discovered on 18 February 1930 by 24-year-old astronomer Clyde Tombaugh at Lowell Observatory, Pluto was the ninth planet for 76 years. Its name was suggested by 11-year-old Venetia Burney of Oxford, England, who thought the Roman god of the underworld suited a world so cold and dark.

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union redefined "planet," and Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet โ€” a decision that sparked public outcry and debate that continues to this day. Many scientists and fans still consider Pluto a full-fledged member of the planetary family.
